Not without flaws, understandable for a first tryout, the musical was nonetheless terrific, with a thoughtful, involving book and lyrics, and rich, evocative music score, and looked to have a big life ahead.

After those 16 years, the show finally -- and remarkably -- has gotten its second chance, this time at the Tony-winning for regional theater, the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. After working on the show on and off, Harmony opened on September 15.

Manilow deserves thanks, especially after fighting off a case of bronchitis that forced him to cancel several performances and compounded his basic condition with, as he phrased it, "Jewish guilt" for all sorts of date changes. However, he may have resumed singing too soon.

Not since Hugh Jackman has there been a show on the Great White Way as critic proof as this one. The chance for fanilows to see Barry Manilow in the relatively intimate setting of the St. James Theatre is a powerful lure and whatever critics say, they'll keep coming as long as the show keeps extending.
