Given the regime's history of suppressing dissent, high mutual levels of mistrust and the failure of Annan plan, sincere dialogue between the sides appears to be a pipe dream at this point. So, where does this leave us?
All of Putin's bold defiance on behalf of the Assad regime is another wake-up call for this administration that he is determined to "re-reset" U.S.-Russian relations, and face down anyone who stands in the way of Russia reasserting its position in the Middle East.
The barbarity of Assad's regime in Syria has generated an understandable urge for a quick military solution. However, for the sakes Americans and Syrians, military intervention should be our last resort and should be carefully planned.
There is likely a long road ahead before we can truly enable Syria's political transition, and until then, innocent lives cry out for the global community to collectively speak out against a regime lacking in fundamental human rights.
