Attention "Mad Men" fans: It's time to leave Betty (Draper) Francis' body alone. Last night "Mad Men" returned -- and along with Don's cheating ways, Megan's excellent sartorial choices and Peggy's badass lady boss demeanor, we were subjected to a deluge of fat-shaming comments about Betty.
When Mad Men presented an overweight Betty Draper Sunday night, I shivered with dread. We are still a society that does not know how to deal with women and weight when it comes to entertainment. Will fat woman always be a joke or a tragedy?
Henry, Betty's politician husband, to his credit, never once shames her for her changing looks. I can't say the same for "Mad Men" viewers, many of whom appear to see Betty's weight gain as a reason in and of itself to dislike her.
