The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service counted 6,147 dead and 3,046 injured birds in the Gulf in the 12 months after the spill began. Actual losses are larger than the data indicate. Years after the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill, estimates of related seabird deaths and injuries ballooned to 250,000.
