I write this piece following the ground work laid by W.E.B. Dubois's Veil of Double Consciousness. The veil he described was a visualization of racial duality. I now undertake the daunting task of clarifying the new veil of economics that has covered the struggles of a generation.
On the housing front, the good news is that the president wants Mel Watt to head the FHFA. The really bad news is that the problems in the U.S. housing system are currently so entrenched that, even if he is confirmed, Mel Watt will be hard-pressed to resolve them.
Not only has Black wealth diminished, but so too has the existence of much of this nation's Black middle class itself. Black, White or Brown -- that is a startling reality that should have all of us deeply concerned.
Education, employment, predatory lending, you name it: There are systemic forces that have worked against our ability to create wealth. However, perhaps a bigger problem is the mind-set some of these factors have helped to create.
