Living in the light of humility, kindness and compassion is the deep lesson and timeless inspiration of Bodhi Day. When we celebrate Bodhi Day this year I hope that we can celebrate it as a 21st century holiday, embracing the full weight of Buddhism's long history without being limited by it.
What I have experienced over time has not always been pleasant, but more and more I am able to be with what is and to use skillful means to make choices that allow me to align with myself and move closer to an unshakable freedom.
Today, all over the world, Zen Buddhists are celebrating the day of the Buddha's enlightenment. Known in Japan as "Rohatsu," this Bodhi Day marks the defining event in the legend of Shakyamuni Buddha: his enlightenment experience.
