America has vilified Brian Williams for lying and NBC suspended him for six months. Bill O'Reilly was not in a war zone and wasn't in a combat situation. Can anyone explain how O'Reilly is better, or more deserving of leniency than Brian Williams?
You have landed in a huge, messy puddle of your own making. You are a champion of independent, fair, reliable journalism at its best in a moment in our country's history when that tradition, which you and I both love and support, is wobbling.
There is no place for unchecked celebrity in journalism. And there is no place for loyalty in the face of scandal, either. Brian Williams has been an anchor at NBC since 2004. And after 10 years on the job, it took just a second for his career to crumble like the Berlin Wall.
What is important here is that Mr. Williams made a swift, contrite and very public apology. It takes courage to go before several million people, and say without excuse or blame, "I was wrong. I am sorry."
