As the saying goes, the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Unfortunately, that saying does not bode well for the thousands of children who will be displaced when 54 schools shut down this year.
I am not saying Catholic schools are THE answer to the outbreaks of violence seen in our most challenged communities. However, we know that they, along with others, are important community based organizations that when gone leave a tremendous void.
Even though it isn't a panacea, we should move to an elected school board. Therefore, if the referendum gets on the ballot in your ward, vote for it. If it doesn't, push your state legislators to change the law in Springfield.
On February 28, WGN-TV named Octavia Sansing-Rhodes of Herzl Elementary their "Teacher of the Month." It came just six days after CPS CEO Jean-Claude Brizard effectively fired her, along with everybody else who works at Herzl.
Who in their right mind thought it would be a good educational decision to move black kids from 95% black North Lawndale to Little Village High School in a 95% Latino community? Racial violence was predictable if not guaranteed.
