More than four decades since I sat in Bolgen's classroom drawing pictures of the music she played, I'm still thinking about the connections between music and imagination. As an academic, I'm glad to know there's research that helps to explain this.

When we say "children's music" we generally think of music written FOR children. Children make their own music, and they do for reasons that meet developmental needs for expression, belonging, comfort, and complexity -- they sing to know.
