The summer of 2014 will have a lead story all its own, and there are already many candidates for top honors. So follows a suggested "top 19" list of the stories most likely to dominate the news (if not the beach reading) this summer.
We are currently in the midst of what scientists consider the sixth mass extinction in planetary history, with between 150 and 200 species going extinct daily, a pace 1,000 times greater than the "natural" or "background" extinction rate.
The deniers do not care that 97 percent of scientists agree that climate change is anthropogenic because only 97 percent of scientists agree, not 100 percent. Even with mass consensus, there are still those three percent and those three percent are key to legitimizing the debate.
