Just minutes from Columbine, on the day before the one-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, a gunman walked into his high school. What immediately went through my mind was, "Not again."
Today, we remember the young victims of the Virginia Tech shooting by committing ourselves to reduce gun violence. Too many mass shootings and daily acts of gun violence have ended young lives for us not to speak out.
There are different types of gun violence, just like there are different types of diseases. And just like difference types of diseases and illnesses, there are different approaches to reduce gun violence.
From the fiscal cliff debate to the crisis in Syria, the news cycle and our attention spans will eventually wander. That is why it is all the more important for the Democratic party to keep the pressure up on gun control.
We are a highly moral country. We decry torture, we decry discrimination, we decry exploitation, and we decry political suppression wherever in the world it occurs. Then why should we not decry the terror of gun violence?
