When one party has made explicit that its primary goal is to block nearly anything proposed by a sitting president and, further, to undo substantive achievements to date -- when revenge requires all Republican senators and representatives to adhere to that primary goal -- then seeking agreement is seen as a contradiction.
The terrifying thing about last night is not that Republicans won a lot of individual races. The terrifying thing is that last night was a compete vindication of McConnell et al's strategic gamble. And so long as that strategy works, our elected officials won't actually bother to legislate or govern.
The fact is that Congress does not need some sort of invitation from the White House in order to do their job. To take affirmative action toward addressing our nation's problems, Congress should put aside its letterhead and stop writing letters to the President and federal agencies asking them to take action.
