Whether consciously or not, the holidays are filled with situations in which we feel socially evaluated by others, and assessed by our ability to give others what they want -- materially and emotionally.
I find it ironic that this time of year is so stressful. It's a time of reflection, appreciation and celebration. Instead, we're bombarded with to-dos, family and work obligations and the added pressure of holiday gift-giving.
Deep down, we know that holidays are not just sugar and spice. Too often for many of us it is also about playing the role of caregiver, nurturer, exemplary host(ess), peacekeeper, logistical coordinator and cook.
