New York City scored a major coup when it successfully lured Cornell University to build a campus for Cornell Tech, its applied sciences program, on Roosevelt Island, smack in the middle of the East River.
And, as New York's new mayor begins to act on his campaign pledge to address income inequity, it would be easy to look west and make a tech comparison. But that would be very much the wrong thing to do.
Goldwater Hospital, which has been servicing the community for nearly a century, will be closing in a few months. Cornell's new Tech campus will be built on its site. Many of the patients have already been transferred out and some wards now lie empty.
