A lack of support for gifted low-income kids has consequences for their representation in positions of leadership in society as well as lost innovations. For at least the last half-century, we have underserved low-income gifted kids, losing countless minds and corresponding innovations.
Lead poisoning is devastating to the nervous systems of infants. It leads to diminished cognitive functioning, as measured by IQ tests and school performance, across a person's entire life. The kids in Flint deserve special attention and immediate effective intervention.
We're not sure. Although we agree that the destinies of young people are malleable, we worry as well about the difficulty of achieving the right balance in school between character education and academic preparation.
