In New Orleans the new president of the Southern Baptist Church reaffirmed the SBC's opposition to gay marriage. In Boston, almost simultaneously, the First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down provisions of the Defense of Marriage Act that deny federal benefits to same-sex couples.
