Can you imagine standing at your partner's funeral as the flag bearer walks right past you to present the American flag to some distant relative of your partner? Can you imagine being invisible in the eyes of the government of the country your partner gave his or her life for?
If we are going to continue to carry the banner of the "land of the free," there must continue to be change in the "home of the brave." This is because the very brave we speak of are being denied liberty and equal protection under the law.
Thanks in part to the misleadingly named Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the military does not acknowledge me as a spouse, nor do they acknowledge me as our child's mother. The only recognition I receive is the status of "caregiver."
