A few weeks back, my partner Joon and I were on a day trip upstate. Rihanna's song Work came on our "mixtape". Amidst all of the jagged edges of clipped beats and nonsensical sprechstimme, I again had the sense of this being a truly unusual song.
I love attempting to craft a little utopia here in our Brooklyn HQ. Where else do you get to pay people -- generously, in cash and through tools, facilities and expertise -- with no purpose but to create and inspire?
We are enslaved to systems that don't have our best interests at heart, in order to fulfill a basic human need: communication. We need to seriously consider creating alternatives to the internet, which would allow our communities to have ownership over how we talk and share information.
When I was invited to sign a petition requesting that Apple add an art category to the app store, my first reaction was one of surprise. I whipped out my phone, swiped through, and found that indeed, there was no art category.
