After volcanic activity in Iceland on April 14th caused air space closures in England and around Europe, stranded English travelers received assistance quickly while efforts to assist US citizens stranded abroad seem to be lagging.
Out of the country's 3 major volcanoes, Hekla, Katla and Grimsvotn, (Imagine if my name was Grimsvotn?) what's interesting, and a bit ominous, is that Mount Katla usually erupts whenever Eyjafjallajokull does, but with greater force.
Our man-made crises fill our everyday lives, but we ignore natural phenomena at our peril. We lose sight of how detached from our environment we've become, how thin the veneer of civilization really is, and how fragile our bodies and our institutions really are.
