This week, The New York Times published a comprehensive investigation into deplorable animal treatment at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC). It's appalling that such activities -- conducted with the goal of helping a private-sector industry turn a higher profit -- are subsidized by U.S. taxpayers.
Let's keep saving and loving the world while we give ourselves the same gift. Let's strive to infuse joy into every detail possible. At times we'll feel like the world is just too crazy and we'll wonder if we can keep our sanity intact, but we can still rally and transform everything from the inside out.
With these movies, we see two reactions by Big Agriculture and Big Food to documentaries sounding the alarm about America's systemic problems with food, from how it's produced, marketed, and regulated to its final impact on eaters suffering from a growing list of ailments. But both responses are ultimately problematic.
