In January 2001, I went to California's Monterey coast for the Asilomar ecological conference. About 300 people met in Watsonville to take a bus tour through farms in the prosperous Pajaro Valley near Watsonville.
While growing up, we'd get sick of hearing it every time it was farm day. Now that I have my own kids, I've learned to realize how so many valuable life lessons were acquired on the farm. It's those things that you can never learn anywhere else.
The GIPSA rules would create a fair marketplace for farmers to sell their livestock without fear of retaliation from packers and integrators, require packers to maintain written records over price deviations and prevent undue preferences.
Secretly, I could live on chocolate and coffee. But don't tell anyone, since I make my living writing about vegetables. And my darkest secret is this: My favorite thing in the whole world is (or was) chicken pan drippings.
