I am lonely. Often. By choice. That's right. I said by choice. Sometimes it's almost too painful to tolerate. I do more than tolerate it, however: I nurture it; I welcome it. I used to run away from my loneliness, as if it was a demon trying to attack me.
We have hundreds of Facebook friends. We are connected to the world through our computers, phones and tablets. We are the most connected generation of women in the history of the planet. We are also the loneliest.
Loneliness weakens the immune system, increases sensitivity to physical pain, and creates depression and fatigue. Moreover, it can generate inflammation throughout the body, leading to a range of health risks.
