The West, Texas event was a tragedy of almost epic proportion because of its far-reaching and direct impact upon an entire community. Yet, it received only modest attention in the mainstream press at the time of its occurrence and subsequently.
It is never too early, they are never too young, to learn that they can make a difference. They count. They matter. Their actions affect others. And most importantly, that they are a world and they can save a world.
The evidence is now overwhelming that lax enforcement was abetted by the seven state and Federal agencies that looked the other way or failed to see its 270 tons of potentially explosive ammonium nitrate.
The more perspective and understanding we have on life, and the less we play into their hands and let people who want to terrorize us have their way, whether domestic or foreign, the better we honor loss -- all loss -- and ourselves.
