The MyPlate for Older Adults just got a facelift thanks to nutrition researchers at Tufts University with support from the folks at the AARP Foundation. I love this new healthy eating visual because it not only colorfully depicts the five basic food groups: fruits, veggies, grains, dairy and protein. But it also emphasizes other important foods and nutrients that we need as we age.
Each time something happens to me that reminds me that I'm heading into the third act of my life, I am startled and a bit annoyed. It's not that I didn't know these things would happen -- the memory lapses, the slight hair loss, tiring more quickly, sleeping less soundly -- I just thought they would happen, you know, later.
When they went off to college, you turned their rooms into your home office, gym, or (wo)man cave. Now they're back, maybe just for a pit stop on the way to real life, but they're not the same kids who left and you're all aware that even though the rules and roles have changed, it's not clear what the new ones are -- yours or theirs.
"But really it is not the size of the audience that matters. It's about whether or not you are connecting with them. In doing my cabaret show I have discovered that intimacy with an audience has nothing to do with the number of people or the size of the venue. It's all about you daring to be vulnerable and authentic and honest."
I don't think this is a bad thing. I believe that if you've always had a big nose and hated being taunted for it, there was nothing wrong with having it adjusted to make you feel better about yourself. If you have "Obama" ears, and they bother you, get them fixed, and if you have wrinkles, and you don't like looking old, get a face lift.
