The First Amendment guarantees our right to embrace any religion we choose, no matter how peculiar. It also protects our right to talk about it along with almost anything else (truthfulness is optional).
Despite the recent well-publicized and deeply disturbing child molestation trial of self-proclaimed polygamist prophet Warren Jeffs, TV reality show polygamist Kody Brown and his trendy wives and family seem to be everywhere these days.
There is another aspect to the Warren Jeffs trial that I find particularly disturbing, one which has not received much media attention, overshadowed as it has been by Jeffs' horrendous sexual exploitations.
About 20% of boys, and 25% of girls, are sexually abused in the United States. If we were to ignore our age of consent laws, we could reduce those numbers dramatically. And why stop with the laws governing sex?
For eighteen years of my life I was a member of the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I wore long pioneer style dresses, styled my hair in the FLDS up-do fashion, and I believed that Warren Jeffs was the prophet.
