Let us continue our look back at the year in film with a token acknowledgement of ten films that were not quite as bad as their critical reputations. For the record, not all of them are good pictures, but none are pure failures, either.
Tyler Perry never gives his audience a chance to "get" the message. He wants to deliver it, wrapped in a cannon ball and shot across the room, but the poems in For Colored Girls need to breathe on their own.
For Colored Girls is not my favorite Tyler Perry film, but I recommend you see for yourself. Although I hoped for something better, it was refreshing to watch an ensemble of talented black actresses in non-demeaning roles.
You can define homophobia when you point to the words used to condemn and ridicule gay people. You can see it. You can understand it. And you may even feel it. But do you know what it means to be robbed of an imagination?
