I am all for dumping carbon stocks, if for no other reason than a sense of decency and honor. And the spectacle of targeting the enemy -- giving them a name and an address -- is great, but it needs to be linked to other forms of leverage.
The popular notion is that Americans are addicted to fossil fuels but I find that's not true," says Bill McKibben. "The addicts are the big fossil fuel companies that are just fatally addicted to the level of profit they are able to deduce."
Although calling Americans energy gluttons doesn't suggest the same sense of crisis as addiction, it better captures how we should treat the problem. We don't need a detox program; we need a healthier relationship with energy consumption.
The fossil fuel lobby aggressively uses propaganda to block public health protections, manipulate the energy debate, defend their massive government handouts and attack clean energy sources that threaten to displace them.
