Franklin Graham Is the Worst Thing to Happen to God (and America) in a While

Derek Penwell | Posted 02.08.2016 | Religion

Not only is Franklin Graham's penurious score-keeping of who's in and who's out a distortion of Christianity, it's a bastardization of what it means to be American.

The Church Owes Planned Parenthood an Apology

Sadly, the silence from Christian leaders once so outspoken about the doctored Planned Parenthood videos has become deafening. But the absence of their leadership shouldn't stop the rest of us from seeking forgiveness no matter how much we may disagree with our neighbors.

Most election cycles occur within well-understood parameters. Indeed, these parameters are so generally accepted by the experts that they assume the character of revealed truth. And so they appear to be, until their foundations are shifted and we are suddenly confronted by new arrangements.

A Graham Shame

As an evangelical Christian, I've finally come to the sad conclusion that the public rhetoric of the current CEO of the Billy Graham Association is nothing but a #GrahamShame.

Beating Trump to the Punch: Franklin Graham's Islamophobia

Among those calling out Trump on his opportunistic xenophobia are, thankfully, numerous faith leaders. One faith leader who didn't join his peers is Franklin Graham. He didn't remain silent, mind you, but doubled down, boasting that he beat Trump to the punch.

Any service member who wants to help the virulently Islamophobic Franklin Graham spread his twisted version of the "love" of Jesus to desperate impoverished children around the world under the guise of giving them gifts is perfectly free to do so.

9 Arguments From the Bible Fundamentalists Should Have to Make

The real war on religion is being waged by those on the Right who read the Bible not as the story of God's saving interaction with the world through the unfolding of God's reign, but either as foundational for a conservative politics of self-interest or as a blueprint for a post-Enlightenment cult of individual piety.

Other Families' Values

2015 may well go down in history as the year that traditional family values (which frequently hide behind the purported threat of an imaginary "War Against Christians") finally got exposed for the perversions of its loudest proponents' hypocrisy.

Grace Verses Condemnation: Which Song Do We Sing?

Charles Redfern | Posted 08.07.2015 | Religion
Charles Redfern

Call it the collision of two choirs. One lobs paranoid epithets from a grim cloister and hogs the microphone; the other - in which I recently bathed in a week-long conference featuring evangelical academics, scientists, and ecological activists at Gordon College in Massachusetts - sings with gentle conviction and grace. It's soothing.

5 Reasons Franklin Graham Is Once Again the Worst Thing to Happen to God in a While

Derek Penwell | Posted 08.03.2015 | Religion
Derek Penwell

Here's the thing, Franklin Graham isn't the voice of Christianity, let alone a stand in for the voice of God. In fact, much of the rest of Christianity has to work overtime because Franklin Graham invests so much energy saying things that make the rest of us who take God seriously shake our heads; which is why Franklin Graham is once again the worst thing to happen to God in a while

Why has American Christianity become known for the pain it causes? Let American Christianity stop being known as a religion that hurts, as a faith focused on what we're against, and instead let them know we are Christians by our love.

Franklin Graham and Christian Bigotry

Our prejudices and bigotry require very little attention. Only radical Muslims make the news and peace-loving Muslims do not. Few of us have Muslim friends. But lack of information is bigotry's best friend -- bigotry feeds on precious little (biased) information.

Franklin Graham Should Worry About Radicalizing Right-Wing Christians, Not Muslims

Qasim Rashid | Posted 07.20.2015 | Religion

In his July 17 Facebook post, Franklin Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse, spewed unhinged hatred and bigotry against American Muslims. Writing his response to the Chattanooga shooting. Such language would, and does, radicalize ignorant youth. It fosters terrorism.

The Bible Does Not Condemn Homosexuality

Billy Graham's son is terrified that President Obama and a whole host of us have chucked out our Bibles in order to support marriage equality. This is laughable if it weren't so powerfully sad. Here's the thing, Franklin: You need to read your Bible better.

Being "Countercultural" Is Not a Virtue

Certain Christians would do well to reflect seriously on why their views on same-sex marriage and gay rights more generally have gone out of favor, rather than attempting a retreat into a countercultural enclave.

Brother, when you reference the Bible with a level of biblical illiteracy you have shown in your response to the SCOTUS ruling on same-sex marriage, it is too much. You have embarrassed yourself and your clan.

I grew up thinking Billy Graham was a hero. My family was Baptist; my dad, a Baptist preacher. I was an adult before I realized Graham wasn't exclusively Baptist though by then he might as well have been because conservative Christians seemed, largely, to have let go of doctrinal differences in favor of ideological absolutes.
