Gay Christian

I am a theology graduate student who also happens to be a lesbian. Sometimes other members of my parish make me feel like a social pariah and a second-class member of the Church.

When developing gay life in America starts to surface in books about the era, gay spirituality will emerge as one of the more fascinating subjects. A significant new book that deals with the subject has just appeared.

Courage is an apostolate that "ministers to persons with same-sex attraction and their loved ones." Lay people may conclude that Courage is the only option for LGBT Catholics. This couldn't be further from the truth.

The working title was "gay Christian dialogue," a phrase that makes everything sound so simple: there are gay people, there are straight people, there are Christians. The dialogue itself taught me otherwise.

To remain an engaged and relevant institution, Baylor must change. Its message to gays and lesbians can't be: If you are gay, there is no love for you. Christ promises more.

There are certain churches that say they have become inclusive to LGBT christians, but at the same time the refuse protect them or exclude those who oppose the inclusivity or even attack them.

Today is a red letter day at Soulforce. One of the organizations with whom we have worked has finally ended its formal relationship with the "gay conversion" ministry Exodus International.

When it comes right down to it, we'd all like to have a purpose, a reason for being here. Yet, when some are told that they aren't what God intended, the pain is raw, their purpose ostensibly less so.

We should choose to stay in the Church while embracing Christ's guidance -- ask questions, seek answers and never stop knocking -- because one day the door will be opened.

For those who insist that we are and must be a Christian Nation, may I suggest that the current "Kill the Gays" strategy is not only flawed, it is anything but Christ-like.

This past Sunday, against the will of the Archbishop of New York, I and dozens of other Catholics carried this hope to the streets of New York City.

According to Christian theology, God reveals Godself most fully in the person of Jesus Christ. As such, it follows that sin is the closet, or the resistance to revealing ourselves fully to God and to others.
