Carol: A Real Love Story?

Joanne Fleisher | Posted 02.02.2016 | Queer Voices
Joanne Fleisher

t is not your typical lesbian love story. It lacks some of the passion and hot sex that makes many coming out movies compelling. But, when you encounter a magnetic attraction to someone that will rip your life to shreds, the unfolding of the love story may at first seem understated and unclear. When you are married to a man and your lesbian catalyst appears, anything can happen.

Shameful U.S. History Repeating Itself

On November 28, 2015, my spouse and I went to see Trumbo, which is based upon the life of Dalton Trumbo and how it was impacted during one of the most shameful times in U.S. history -- the McCarthy era. The film interested me because of many comparable similarities today and because the father of close childhood friends of mine had been included on the Hollywood-blacklist.

Why Dating Women Is More Fun Than Dating Men

When I lived in San Francisco in the nineties, my friend Michelle told me about a lesbian couple who were looking for frozen sperm together. At that time I was married to a man, and I thought Michelle was talking about some people who wanted to breed cocker spaniels.

Will Marriage Open the Closet Door?

What happened to Terry Mutchler? In her gripping memoir, Under This Beautiful Dome, the voice I hear is weak, barely audible. This isn't the woman I know as a friend and outspoken human rights advocate.

The W.H. Must Do More for Older LGBT Cancer Survivors

Liz Margolies, L.C.S.W.

The single biggest risk factor for developing cancer is age and older LGBTQ people are more likely to be living alone when cancer strikes. While we might wish that a lifetime of family rejection would be reversed upon hearing of a cancer diagnosis, sadly that is not always the case.

Everyone is going through something, and nobody is looking for perfect friends. We are just looking for people with whom we can bond over a mutual lack of clarity.

Coming Out: I Am a Man

Barrett Pall

Throughout this process I've left Barrett the boy and have become Barrett the man. A man who released the shame he felt for wanting to love another man. A man who addressed issues that were holding him back. A man who has started to live authentically. A real man.

A Pope Without a Doctrine and the Media That Helps Make It Up

Benjamin Brenkert | Posted 03.15.2015 | Religion
Benjamin Brenkert

Pope Francis needs to do more than simply author apostolic exhortations and encyclicals, or replace Western Cardinals and Bishops with non-Western Cardinals and Bishops. Now the laity who are energized by Pope Francis' reform need him to use his pen.

You might think a gay stay-at-home Dad in San Francisco would be surrounded by others in similar situations - I did. But more often that not I was reminded of how rare a species I was - oftentimes I was the only gay dad anywhere.

Religion aside, I firmly believe that those who argue that homosexuality is a choice do so in order to justify senseless beatings of gays and lesbians, and continued discrimination and mistreatment against them. I also believe without a doubt that it is a choice to be a nasty human being.

It's not that I'm interested in being a guy, or taking on a romantic role other than my own, but Travolta is part of my adolescent history. He's really the only male actor I've imitated with any regularity -- and I became Travolta across a range of characters.

I questioned why I continued to stay. Was it habit? Some sadistic sense of comfort? Did I think we'd change back into the people we once were? I'm not a weak person. I grew up in such a loving home. My parents have a beautiful marriage. What's wrong with me?

The Cause of Homosexuality Is Irrelevant

Many people seem fixated on the fact that the actual cause of homosexuality has not yet been established with any degree of certainty. As someone who likes to understand the reasons things occur, I respect and appreciate the curiosity. However, the ultimate result remains the same, regardless of whether the cause is genetic, environmental, or some combination of the two.

As long as this statistic is being touted as a scientifically proven fact, we have a problem. It is daily espousing a condescending correlation between lesbian identity and unhealthy weight. This notion is and will continue to affect the physical and emotional well-being of many a queer girl, both young and old.

Julie R. Enszer

Poetry is a cacophony of voices. I want more people to write poems, especially queer people, feminists, and people of color. For too long LGBT voices, feminist voices, and voices of people of color have been excluded or eluded from literary cultures and canons.

Its intention is to help more women realize that their feelings regarding their sexual orientation are legitimate and that they are not alone.
