America is the land of breakthrough science -- and health care scams. There is no question that Solvadi is a lifesaver for millions of Americans infected by Hepatitis C. Yet Solvadi is also the poster child of a U.S. health care system that is being bankrupted by greed, lobbying and indefensible policies on drug pricing.
Antibiotics treat short-term infections, they do not represent steady big pay-out profits. So, despite the fact that there's a growing roster of deadly bacterial diseases threatening the population, solidly resistant to the "old" antibiotics -- big pharmaceutical companies are not exactly rushing to our defense.
Thursday was panning out to be a seemingly ordinary day in the goings on of the International AIDS Conference when the shouts of a group of protesters began rumbling throughout the halls. It would appear that, with signs reading "Gilead Kills," these protestors were up in arms over the pharmaceutical company that holds the overwhelming majority of HIV medications.
