The conservative assault on the budget, the health care law, unions, public broadcasting, and the rights of women has predictably continued. Less unpredictable was the powerful response by millions of people.
If labor fails after rebuffing the worst of these attacks, the slow decline in private‐sector unionism will be mirrored by a similar decline in the public sector that accelerates the race to the bottom for the American economy.
The governor recognized that state employees receive better benefits than most employees in private industry. He could've worked to make the situation better for them, but he chose to make the situation for state employees worse.
