A saving grace of group dynamics is that the longer a group stays together, the longer the people in it begin to think similarly, act similarly, and live similarly. That's referred to as social cohesion, and that cohesion is the stuff of culture.
Most humans prefer to socialize in groups but work in solitude, usually because the perception is they have more control over the finished product and will yield the benefits of a job well done. But business does not value that independent spirit in the same way.

Not necessarily. Teams can be smarter and more effective than the individuals who make up the team -- the whole can indeed be bigger and better than just the sum of its parts, but only under the right circumstances.
