What's needed are policies that address the underlying social, cultural, and mental health factors that drive gun violence, with the understanding that these issues vary from one region of the country to another.
As individuals, we are responsible for our choices, especially the choice to kill. But something in our collective heart appears diseased. We cling to guns, it seems, more tightly than we cling to God.
America is a land of ingenuity, creativity and hope. It is also a country distinguished by the amount of gun violence we endure year in and year out. It's time we call on our strengths, as a nation, to weed out the root causes of that violence and find lasting solutions.
