There are less than 1,200 Hawaiian monk seals left in the world. Without intervention and sufficient help, within a generation, the species could be extinct. For one of only two warm water seals left on earth, that would be a sad end.
Watching Mindy the Monk Seal made me think that once in a while we should all just throw ourselves into our favorite relaxing activity with no time limitations or rules. Let's let the waves take us and let's enjoy the blissful ride of pure relaxation. Our minds and bodies will thank us.
Despite the rawness of nature, the world made more sense in the oceans, the forests and the mountains. Yet, it was from the wilderness through one animal -- an endangered seal named KP2 (Kauai Pup 2) -- that my faith in the hand of man was restored.
When so much is at risk, the way forward must be vigilance from the community local and afar to respect Hawaiian monk seals and ensure their survival. We must all be part of that effort -- and halting these killings is an important first step.
