The idea that older people lose the capacity to learn is pervasive in our society. We hear it all the time, even from our own children. Of course, if people have dementia, they do need help. But a new study suggests those who don't likely have the ability to make decisions on their own.
The reality is that your geographical location, your access to midwifery and obstetric care and who is available if there is a complication is all too often a determinant of whether a woman and her newborn will live or die. Recently, I toured a health clinic in India and met a girl named Anju. Anju's family is poor. They live far away in a remote village that has no running water or health care. Although Anju is only 14, her parents expect her to marry and start having children soon.
