Hopelessness and despair are too often the products of poverty. Today, 15.5 million children are living in poverty in America -- the highest child poverty rate the nation has seen since 1959.
The shadow of poverty has fallen on Long Island, New York, the birthplace of the suburban American dream.
All lost not only their belongings but at least a year of schooling and a big chunk of their childhoods. They are still struggling and, by now, largely forgotten.
