Homophobic Christians

The Duality of Being a Gay Christian

As a gay Christian, I have only faced true discrimination for one of these identities. Here's a hint: It's not Christianity. When I tell someone I'm Christian, they don't come up with a series of offensive questions and remarks. I have never felt threatened or in danger when praying or practicing my Christian beliefs. Christianity is not an oppressed identity.

The Christian Closet

A famous quotation widely attributed to Gandhi has been on my mind a lot lately: "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." Why are today's Christians such a departure from the actual person of Christ?

Until LGBT people feel safe around people who call themselves Christians, we shouldn't have a problem with anything they might have to say about their experience with Christianity. We can start by being a part of the solution instead a part of the problem.

Is Every Christian Who's Against Gay Marriage Necessarily a Bigot?

The call of today's anti-gay Christians is "Stop calling us bigots, everyone! Just because we believe what the Bible says about homosexuality does not make us bigots!" So let's think about that.

For everyone's sake, it's long past time to stop claiming that right-wing Christian revulsion in response to same-sex romantic love has anything to do with the Bible. Nothing in scriptures prohibits a kiss between two men.

How a Conservative Catholic Girl Became a Producer on a Gay Web Series

I'm still a radical, political queer and Kristyne is still a conservative, Catholic girl, and I am so happy that we were able to work together, despite our differences, to produce EastSiders.

Loving All God's Children Equally

My hope and prayer is for the church to fully embrace all LGBTQI people. This will have a dramatic impact for many, but most especially for our youth, who do not need to be shamed, "healed" or merely tolerated but fully embraced and loved just as they are, beautifully created in God's image.

Religious Homphobia Is Still Homophobia

Non-affirming Christians honestly, truly believe they are being loving by attempting to change our orientation, encourage celibacy, or ban us from their pews -- but to name their actions as anything but what they are would be to turn a blind eye to the epidemic of religious homophobia.

Why Can't Holy Spaces Be Safe Spaces?

I grew up in a world in which evangelical megachurches locked sweet kids in closets until they escaped into pill bottles. Fear and faith worked together to transform adolescent love letters into criminal evidence.

2013-12-03-Elielwherewereyoustillsmall.pngLast April I published a piece of my poetry, entitled "Where Were You?" I shared this spoken-word poem after attending a Seventh-day Adventist conference called "Gays in the Family" and walking away feeling more than ever that my church was talking at me instead of with me.

God Hates Gays Who Own Chandeliers? The Folks at Ivory & Deene Seem to Think So

Rather than simply declining our request, as so many companies we have sought sponsorship from have, Ruby decided to do the least Christian thing she could think of: directly and personally judge and shame strangers. She may not have called us "faggots," but she might as well have.

We Cannot Be Silent

When those of us who call ourselves Christians stand by in silence as someone, speaking with the authority granted to pastors entrusted with teaching the Word of God, uses the Word to cultivate disgust toward individuals made in the image of God, we tacitly concur with his conclusions.

'You're a Fat-Ass... and You're Going to Hell!'

You, a well-meaning Christian, sign on to Facebook, only to see an overweight deacon from your church downing the super-sized everything at the local fast-food joint. Are you going to tell him he's going right to hell because he is a glutton? You would have some biblical backing if you did.

Notes On Anti-Gay Camp

For comedy I turn to Christian bigots, but they have let me down of late. What's missing from the current crop, what today's anti-gay preachers, with their infantile depictions of "poo-poo pansies," fail to provide, is camp.
