The overuse of prisons is not unique to the developing world. Almost half of the world's prisoners are held in the U.S., China, and Russia. America has the highest number of prisoners and the highest rate of imprisonment of any country.
The fire in Comayagua is a symbol of a much larger fire that the United States has left burning, and too often flamed, since turning Honduras into an anti-communist base. The answer is not further militarization. We must find another path.
