The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has been needing a shake-up for decades. Change can finally occur in a real and systematic manner, but Cortines needs to be made permanent superintendent in order to carry weight and power in decision making.
The top national environmental groups have virtually no Latinos, African Americans or Asians as CEO, president or executive director. Many of these environmental groups claim diversity by having one or two minorities on their board of directors. Some have hired a few minorities to be on staff.
The sad reality is that substitute teachers have been getting the short end of the stick for way too long. Most receive only a fraction of what regular teachers get paid. Most have no union representation or a retirement plan.
The Obama administration has now announced that it is going to stop releasing children to family members. Instead, it plans to build more detention centers and expel children more quickly. This is not a humane response.
Let's just hope and pray that racially motivated shootings can be prevented in the future through the implementation of better tactics to subdue or disarm individuals who pose a clear and present danger to civilians and police officers.
