I like to tip. I really do. I go out of my way to leave big ones for baristas, bartenders, and waiters who've earned something extra. I just don't understand why I have to. If "gratuity" is required, is it really gratuity?
Tipping is not about generosity. Tipping isn't about gratitude for good service. And tipping certainly isn't about doing what's right and fair for your fellow man. Tipping is about making sure you don't mess up what you're supposed to do.
A lovely attendant was at my side with a paper towel as soon as I finished washing my hands. She thanked me as I put two dollars into the round wicker tip basket. Then she asked if I was OK. She noticed that I was staring at her tips.
