The issuance of a temporary injunction barring the NIH from funding human embryonic stem cell research should hardly have come as a surprise. Many of the same plaintiffs and much of the same legal team filed a similar lawsuit a decade earlier.
If these new stem cells are safe, and perform as hoped, the first injection in patients that took place last Friday will be the 21st century's "shot-heard-round-the-world".
Breakthroughs in stem cell research and regenerative medicine will make health care reform even more important than it is now. The human suffering relieved will be incalculable.
