Many of the state-level organizations lack the resources of larger, national LGBT advocacy organizations. Through "In the States," In the Life Media has done them a crucial service. These organizations now have media tools that they otherwise might not be able to afford.
I immediately realized the potential for a program like In the Life: if people got to know our community -- really know us, in all of our diversity and humanity -- it would be much harder to turn a blind eye to the suffering of their LGBT family and friends, or to vote for anti-LGBT laws.
Hate speech against gay people is embedded in our culture. The most radical voices claim that gay people are a threat to our children and country. What many don't realize is that these messages are crafted by a well-resourced media machine.
