Women were major players in Senate races from New Hampshire to Georgia to Iowa and Kentucky. They were key contenders for governor's seats in at least nine states. They brought their unique perspectives to the political and policy debates from state legislatures to the U.S. Senate.
Fifteen other Americans will also be honored, including Oprah Winfrey and Bill Clinton, but what makes Gloria Steinem's selection notable is how, by extension, the movement she has helped lead over the past four decades will be honored.
Progress has been achieved -- yes, that is obvious -- since the first parade. But the Deltas are marching not so much out of reverence for the past as out of determination to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.
