It makes no sense to gamble on a deal without securing tools that will allow America to remain a world leader. This can happen only when we make the American people a priority and take the necessary steps to enhance our workforce and transportation system, which is the greatest investment we can make in our future.
Verizon's media department should really read their own CEO's statements before they open their mouths in the press. CEO Lowell McAdam and other senior management have said over and over that the company is "shutting off the copper" to force customers onto Verizon's inferior and expensive wireless services. Yet Verizon is denying that they have such a plan.
While enabling cars to move around is not unimportant, I applaud those leaders who are also directing our attention -- and the attention of public departments of transportation -- back to people, to streets as not just conveyances but also destinations, places to linger on foot, as places of beauty, as places whose look and feel greatly define what it means to be in a particular community, why one city differs from another.
Let's make the bold decision to transform our transportation system into something that Americans can be proud of. If we do that, the residual impacts will be much more than just safer transit to and from work and play. A real 21st-century American transportation system will stimulate our economy and revitalize our local communities.
That means adding a track to the 9.8-mile segment of the Long Island Rail Road's Main Line from Floral Park to Hicksville. The extra track would eliminate the current bottleneck where so many branches converge. It would increase the frequency of trains and enable effective reverse commuting to take place.
There is little doubt that Michigan needs much of what Proposal 1 offers, but enough is enough. Liberals need to stop taking what they can get and start demanding what they deserve, and the only way to make sure that happens is to replace as many of the corporate-sponsored Republicans as possible. Voting "no" on Proposal 1 is the first step.
