Look at the bottom of this post and you'll see the images of two teenage lead actresses in recent horror films: one is the star of Insidious 3; the other, the star of It Follows. Both have reason to fear.
The horror franchise Insidious: Chapter 3 opens in theaters today. The film is a prequel to the 2010 and 2013 films and focuses on paranormal investigator Elise Reiner (Lyn Shaye) and her personal and professional history.
Technically polished with occasional striking moments, Insidious: Chapter 2 repeats the beats with some painful expository writing and awkward retconning to explain why the story didn't just stop while it was ahead.
When you look at the numbers on a movie-by-movie basis, you notice something wonderful. A flood of mid-budget, adult-skewed movies have opened at or above expectations. That's the Hollywood we claim we want, so why are we complaining?
