Policing the globe is not America's job. Protecting the interest of wealthy allies like Denmark and other European states is not America's job. Sacrificing its people's lives and wealth to suppress tragic but irrelevant conflicts around the globe is not America's job.
It's good that NATO and Russia met. Dialogue should continue, with the EU and U.S. prepared to negotiate a deal normalizing relations. However, the allies won't know without trying. And everyone would benefit from ending the current impasse. Especially the Ukrainian people.
The U.S. plans on filling Eastern Europe with thousands of troops along with vehicles and weapons to equip an armored combat brigade. Uncle Sam may be bankrupt, but nothing is too expensive for our pampered European allies, who enjoy greater wealth while spending far less on the military.
NATO should be getting the message. Someone in Brussels should be ordering a big cake, compiling the festschrift, preparing golden parachutes for the top brass, and getting the "mission accomplished" banner printed up.
