I left Somalia as a child and returned as a celebrated artist. But it's truly bittersweet, as being celebrated by a famine-struck nation isn't quite the celebration I had dreamt of.
Though I grew up in Somalia, and art encapsulated the world as I knew it, I never aspired to be an artist. I hope that my music opens an eye or two to a great country of both immeasurable beauty and struggle.
