Komen's controversy regarding the decision to pull money from Planned Parenthood was ill-advised, mistimed and strategically inept. The blame must be put at her doorstep as founder and chief executive officer.

Villainizing the entire organization is a mistake. It ignores, and dismisses, the services Planned Parenthood provides that we all -- regardless of our political views -- can agree are important.

Over time, Komen may find its footing and continue to prosper, or it will be permanently damaged by recent events. My feeling is that we've not heard the last of this issue, but time will tell.

Would so many individuals -- 'Racers for the Cure' and celebrities alike -- rise up in protest? My guess is no, they would not -- and this is the power of the stigma around abortion. When access to health care is limited by money or geography, we cannot afford to limit it further with politics.
