I stopped being an LGBT activist not because my beliefs changed, but for the same reason that someone who's worked at an ice cream parlor for years eventually can't stomach another scoop. So it was with some surprise that I found myself on the board of the Don Thompson Film Festival.

Hundreds and thousands of people have fought for equal rights, and I am thankful to them all. Their hard work, sacrifice and struggle brought us here, to a place where my little boy can know who he is and tell me without shame -- and be unaware that shame could even be a factor.

I admit it. There are times when I am bitter and other times when I am almost overcome by joy. Tomorrow will I wake up singing something cheery from a Broadway musical or find myself still waving my fist at the "holy terrorists" on the Christian right? I have no idea.
